The Au – a Munich original
Located in the Au, probably the smallest district in the city and directly by the Isar, we impress our guests with our passion every day. The imposing Wilhelminian-style building in Lilienstrasse looks back on a long history. Back in the day, none other than one of Munich’s best-known and best-loved characters, Karl Valentin, used to come here. Back then, the establishment used to belong to the Wagner brewery.
Today, our owner Florian Oberndorfer is in charge here – his passion for good food and service, as well as his love for the region, have made the restaurant something very special. Our menu includes classics as well as modern interpretations of Bavarian dishes. And: we serve the biggest potato dumplings in town.
With great love for detail, passion for our products and the region, and genuine Munich hospitality, we prove every day at Wirtshaus in der Au that it can be so easy to create unforgettable experiences for everyone.
Our aim is to spread authentic Bavarian joy of life to our guests – each and every guest should have an individual, first-class dining experience and a very special dumpling variation.

Not just yesterday, but for many years now, we have been trying to keep our restaurant ecological and sustainable. We believe that every little contribution to environmental protection counts. We love Bavaria and want it to remain lovable in the future.
- Bio certification 2012 and inclusion of some organic products such as our Bio-Kracherl, Bio-Cheese, Bio-Wadlbeißer, Bio-Farmers Bread, Bio-Eggs and our Fairtrade Orange Lemonade.
- Purchasing our products exclusively from regional and certified suppliers and manufacturers.
- Since 2016 – Commissioning of our small electric company vehicle.
- Use of ecological paper straws.
- Complete restructuring of our in-house waste scheme.
- Since 2017 – Member of Ökoprofit environmental consulting and climate protection program for Munich companies.
- Use of 100% compostable take-away boxes made from recyclable material, including paper carrier bags.
- Climate neutrality in 2019 – support for forest protection projects in Germany.
- Use of recycled paper in the overall office area.
